Artek was founded in 1935 in Helsinki by 4 young idealists - architect and designer couple Alvar and Aino Aalto, arts patron Maire Gullichsen and art historian and critic Nils-Gustav Hahl. The founders conceived Artek as a center for contemporary furniture, home furnishings, art and industrial art as well as propaganda. Artek brought the ideas of modernism to Finland while simultaneously transporting Aalto’s Nordic interpretation of these principles out into the world.
Artek products are developed with the user in mind. They embody the ideas of Modernism, good design for everybody, but represent a human interpretation reflected in choice of natural materials and organic shapes.
Artek collection offers a range of essential products: furniture, lighting, accessories and are used for furnishing private homes, offices or public spaces.
Designer: Alvar Aalto
Chair 611 brings together a solid birch frame with a woven fabric seat and backrest. Designed to offer comfort and practicality, the fabric webbing yields to the sitter, making the chair exceptionally comfortable. Chair 611 can be easily reupholstered, which means the chair can have many life cycles.
One of Alvar Aalto’s first modern furniture designs, Chair 611 has been in continuous production ever since its creation. Suitable for almost any environment, Chair 611 stacks up to four chairs.
Designer: TAF Studio
A universal wooden chair, Atelier Chair was designed for the new restaurant of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, which evokes an artist’s atelier. Commissioned by the museum as part of an initiative to foster contemporary Nordic design, Atelier Chair is compact, lightweight and stackable. Its slender proportions and geometric lines create an arresting aesthetic. Simple and direct, the chair possesses elegant details, such as the connecting bars which hug the front legs. The comfortable and versatile chair is equally at home at a desk, a dining table, a meeting room, a restaurant or in an auditorium. Atelier Chair is designed by Stockholm-based studio TAF Studio.
Bench 153B ColoRing
Designer: Jo Nagasaka
Artek’s FIN/JPN Friendship Collection
For ColoRing, soft-grained pinewood is used as surface veneer. Nagasaka creates an uneven wood surface by removing softer parts with a hard-haired brush, accentuating the natural grain of the wood (Udukuri). Two layers of colored lacquer are then added, only to be subsequently sanded away to partially unveil the layers beneath (Tsugaru-nuri). The results are surprising colour combinations and irregular patterns that evoke topographical maps. With the wooden structure remaining partly visible, natural beauty is retained while creating intriguing juxtapositions.
